Background of the Study
Rural-urban migration is a transformative demographic trend that significantly influences local economies. In Sagamu Local Government Area, Ogun State, the influx of rural migrants into urban centers has reshaped local economic activities, labor markets, and social dynamics. Recent research indicates that migration can lead to both positive outcomes, such as increased entrepreneurial activities and diversified income sources, and negative impacts, including labor market saturation and pressure on urban infrastructure (Akinwumi, 2023). This study examines how rural-urban migration affects local economic activities in Sagamu by analyzing shifts in consumer behavior, employment patterns, and market structures. The investigation employs both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to provide a nuanced understanding of migration’s economic effects. Emphasis is placed on the interplay between migration dynamics and local policy responses, offering insights into how urban growth can be managed sustainably while maximizing economic benefits (Oyeleke, 2024). The study also explores strategies to harness the positive aspects of migration while mitigating its adverse consequences, ensuring a balanced approach to urban development (Fadare, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Rural-urban migration in Sagamu has led to significant disruptions in local economic activities. Rapid population influx strains urban infrastructure, alters labor market dynamics, and creates challenges in service delivery (Balogun, 2023). The lack of effective urban planning and policy frameworks exacerbates these issues, resulting in income disparities and economic instability. This study seeks to identify the specific economic challenges caused by migration and to propose strategies to optimize the benefits while mitigating adverse effects (Olatunde, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the impact of rural-urban migration on local economic activities.

  2. To identify challenges associated with the migration-induced economic shifts.

  3. To recommend policy measures for sustainable urban economic development.

Research Questions:

  1. What economic changes occur in Sagamu due to rural-urban migration?

  2. How does migration affect local employment and income distribution?

  3. What policy interventions can balance the economic impacts of migration?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: Rural-urban migration positively influences entrepreneurial activities.

  2. H₂: Migration-induced population growth strains local infrastructure.

  3. H₃: Effective policy measures can mitigate negative economic impacts.

Significance of the Study
This study is important for urban policy development in Sagamu by providing insights into the economic effects of rural-urban migration. Its findings will inform local government strategies to harness migration benefits and address emerging economic challenges, thereby fostering sustainable urban development (Adesola, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining the effects of rural-urban migration on local economic activities in Sagamu Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on local demographic and economic factors.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Rural-Urban Migration: The movement of people from rural areas to urban centers.

  2. Local Economic Activities: Economic operations and transactions occurring within a specific locality.

  3. Urban Infrastructure: The basic physical systems that support urban life, such as transportation and utilities.
